Book Chapter – Individualised Integration and Contractual Civic Integration Policies: A Dutch Case Study

Thrilled to share that ‘Narratives and Practices of Migrant and Minority Incorporation in European Societies: Contested Diversity and Fractured Belongings’ — edited by Zenia Hellgren, Alexander Gamst Page, and Thomas Sealy — is now out.

I contributed a chapter titled “Individualised Integration and Contractual Civic Integration Policies: A Dutch Case Study,” in which I explore why civic integration policies in the Netherlands have been widely criticized in policy evaluations but never fundamentally improved. I argue that while certain policy outcomes have been debated, the underlying conceptual frames that shape how we understand and approach ‘integration’ issues have remained unquestioned — ultimately limiting meaningful reform.
